Lanzarote Itself
Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands belonging to Spain in the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike it’s sister islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, Lanzarote has a more laid back atmosphere when it comes to tourism.
Although this small volcanic island is only 38 miles long and 13 miles wide, the landscape is fascinating, as much of the island is covered in dry volcanic ash, and has a desert-like climate. The whole nature of the island is the main attraction for visitors, who choose to return here year after year.
There are over five hundred different species of plants on the island, and over 35 different types of animal life, including birds and reptiles, it’s no wonder that UNESCO declared the whole island a Biosphere Reserve back in 1993.
The capital of Lanzarote is Arrecife, a small town on the eastern coast. Arrecife does not boast many outstanding tourist sites, neither does it have a dazzling nightlife, but it does have a harbour which is packed with fishing boats, and the most magnificent beach called El Reducto. This beach was granted a blue flag award for cleanliness by the European Union.. A lovely promenade runs along the beach front, around the San Gines lagoon, which has soft golden sand and calm waters.
